JACKSON COUNTY BREVET
Made History... 2010
Being inspired by his wife Kelly, Robert decided to do something about a 25 year old, out-dated treatment for Aplastic Anemia, a disease that Kelly has been suffering from for over 25 years. That was the end of February 2010 and when the Jackson County Brevet was born. Three and a half months later, almost 600 cyclists showed up to ride in the first ever event in Braselton, GA.
“I couldn’t sit around and do nothing”, Robert said when talking with his wife about wanting to spend the rest of their lives together. You see, they just met in September 2008 and married in March 2009, now with a marriage that they both had desired all their lives. Both in their forties, it seemed like life had just begun with their recent marriage. “I told her I couldn’t change the world, but I did know cycling”, and with that statement, the rest is history.
They made history alright. For a century ride in its first year to have that high of a turnout, is quite rare. A few things were in their favor as most of the metro Atlanta cycling community had never ridden in Jackson County before, so the announcement of a new ride in a whole new area caught their attention. Overwhelming responses from those who rode the smooth terrain of Jackson County are already asking for next year’s date.
Aplastic Anemia, the benefitting charity, received $25,800 from this year’s event. Robert has said his goal for next year is $45,000!!! If you heard the passion and determination in his voice when he talks about this, you would be convinced it is a done deal. “I don’t care...I’m going to do whatever it takes to modernize treatment for this deadly disease. My goal this year was $5,000 and we blew past that like a hurricane, so I don’t think $45,000 is unrealistic. I hope you are one of the 1,000 plus who will be there next year”, he says.
The magnitude of success from this first ever event prompted an unexpected call from Aplastic Anemia’s current Executive Director John Huber, to personally congratulate Robert and Kelly. “You have no idea what an impact you have made from this event” John told the couple in their telephone conversation.
Robert has begun working on getting a date for 2011, among many other aspects of how to improve and expand the Jackson County Brevet into a premier cycling event, not only for cyclists to enjoy but also to continue to raise awareness for Aplastic Anemia. JACKSON COUNTY BREVET Made History... AGAIN 2011
Nobody could have predicted or guessed about the success of the Jackson County Brevet in its 1st annual ride in June, 2010. The same is true for what happened in June 2011. Registration went from 603 in 2010 to 1,000 in 2011. Total proceeds raised and delived to Aplastic Anemia grew from $25,800 in 2010 to $61,800 in 2011. Because of this success, the Jackson County Brevet is now grown to the LARGEST FUNDRAISING EVENT FOR APLASTIC ANEMIA IN THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES.
This event would not happen without the incredible volunteers donating countless hours, the impressive list of sponsors, the Organization Committee, as well as every single cyclist who registered for this event. This is truly a team effort across the board.
Planning has begun for the 3rd annual event to be held on June 16, 2012. The 3rd annual ride promises to be another record breaking event with many new elements for the cyclist’s experience. Watch for upcoming announcements on their Facebook page.

LARGEST fundraising event for Aplastic Anemia in the entire United States
Aplastic Anemia is a very rare and very deadly bone marrow disease. Because of this, it receives almost no funding for research and the treatment has not changed in 25 years!!! With modern medical advancements, this is unacceptable.
"This disease could take my wife at any time without notice: I can't sit around and let that happen; I need your help to change this... not just for Kelly... but for everyone fighting this disease. THIS IS WHY!!!!"
